There are two types. First is the Atmospheric or sometimes called Sealed Combustion and Powered direct-vent models which combine the feature of a Power Vent and a direct-vent model. This can also be vented horizontally or vertically allowing you of flexibility for the structure your house has. Moreover, non-direct units may cause back draft of air inside the house which is not very pleasing.
Overall, a direct type of ventilation is the most space-saving, convenient and energy-efficient way for gas fired heaters. However, it is also important to seek advice form the professionals so your location will be evaluated.
